Just as he is about to cross the Marc-Aurelstraße to get to his publisher's office, Oskar Serti, who has just left his father's house with the words "See you soon, God willing", suddenly remembers his tragic eviction when at the age of twenty, he wanted to enter the seminary in Budapest. Serti stops right in the middle of the street, fearing he may have carelessly plunged his father into a deep mystical crisis…
...En route to his publisher's, Oskar Serti, who has only just come away from his father, is still mulling over the unfortunate words he used to say goodbye. Paralysed by remorse on a pavement of the Franz-Josefs-Kai, he tries to think up the word of apology that will give him fresh hope of saying hello once more…
As he passes in front of St Rupert's church on his way to see his publisher, Oskar Serti suddenly stops, thinking he has seen on the square someone who bears a striking resemblance to his father…

At the very moment he leaves his publisher to join his friends at the Cabaret Fledermaus, Serti stops at the entrance to the Backerstraße, caught by the urge to laugh to himself at the mere thought of his publisher's speech defect, saying just now "Good evening Mishter Sherti"…
Oskar Serti heads for the Cabaret Fledermaus, looking forward to being able to tell his friends that his first novel is going to be published soon. Right in the middle of the Kumpfgasse, he suddenly stops, trying to remember if his publisher really said "Good evening Mishter Sherti" or maybe it was "Good evening Mister Sherti"…
Looking forward to finding his friends at the Café de la Tempête, Serti takes the Singerstaße. He pulls up, suddenly with the definite impression that his publisher did in fact say "Good evening Mister Sherti", although his real name does not appear anywhere on the manuscript he has just handed over to him…
Oskar Serti takes the Kärtnerstraße, impatient to find his friends at the Cabaret Fledermaus, not to tell them of the forthcoming publication of his first novel, but, obsessed at the idea of seeing "Sherti" printed on a book cover, to check with them whether his publisher does have a speech defect...

As he crosses the Rathausplatz, Oskar Serti suddenly comes to a halt, not sure whether it is more important to go and check that the gas has been turned off under Catherine's casserole, or to rush to his father's bedside.
After a few steps along the Teinfalstraße, Oskar Serti stops short to cock an ear, thinking he has heard a fire engine stopping at the foot of his block of flats, which he has just left. Serti is obsessed with the idea that, in his haste to rush to his father's bedside, he may have forgotten to turn off the gas…
As he walks along the Bognergasse on his way to his father's bedside, Oskar Serti suddenly stops in his tracks at the thought that maybe he has forgotten to turn off the gas under the casserole that Catherine de Sélys asked him to cook, and that it must have boiled over, extinguished the flame and let gas leak out into the flat where Catherine has possibly just got back and switched on the light…

As he finds himself in the Invalidenstraße, Oskar Serti hears as distinctly as before this popular Hungarian tune that has been following him around since the Münzgasse. As the tune seems to get neither louder nor softer as he walks, he wonders whether it is coming from outside, or if he is just hearing it inside his head…
As he walks along the Henslerstraße, Oskar Serti can still hear this popular Hungarian tune following him wherever he goes, still not knowing whether the tune is coming from some powerful transistor somewhere in the city or if it is not just all in his mind. Then he passes someone who seems to be humming a song tune…
All of a sudden, right in the middle of the Falkestraße, Oskar Serti can no longer hear this popular Hungarian tune which he is still unsure whether it comes from outside or inside. This sudden absence creates such an emptiness in him that he forgets the sounds of the city and wonders if he hasn't just gone deaf…
